Monarch Butterflies

Durring September and October these Monarchs from the last brood of the summer start their migration from Illinois to the overwintering grounds of high altitude forests in Mexico. In spring, these same monarchs start the trip back north and come to their exact birth point to lay eggs for the next generation. Unlike the Swallowtails, these butterflies have a more varied diet, preference being milkweed which is native to this area.
